Cisco, Covad join to build city Wi-Fi for businesses in San Carlos, Calif.

Cisco has come to the rescue of Silicon Valley, uniting with Covad to breathe life back into the region's Wi-Fi plan, reports The Mercury News. Cisco and Covad plan to build a test network for Wireless Silicon Valley in one square mile of downtown San Carlos, some 30 miles from San Jose. The Merc reports that equipment will start going up on the poles in April and the demonstration project will run for at least three months. The Wi-Fi will be aimed at businesses and government customers, rather than consumers, which has been the issue that has scuppered many municipal Wi-Fi plans, including those in San Francisco, Houston and Chicago.
