Windows Home Server 2008 data corruption bug to go unfixed

By Microsoft Subnet on Tue, 03/11/08 - 11:08am.

Windows Home Server 2008 ... don't try this at home, folks. That's because Microsoft won't be able to quickly fix a bug that can corrupt data on servers when certain programs are used to edit or transfer files stored on a Windows Home Server 2008-based computer that has more than one hard drive. The final fix is expected to be ready by about June, with beta versions coming in the months ahead, reports The Register.

Microsoft has reportedly known about the bug since December. It can occur when users use the following programs:

  • Windows Vista Photo Gallery
  • Windows Live Photo Gallery
  • Microsoft Office OneNote 2007
  • Microsoft Office OneNote 2003
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2007
  • Microsoft Money 2007
  • SyncToy 2.0 Beta
  • Intuit QuickBooks
  • uTorrent

The bug made news when Microsoft evangelist Volker Will lost 180Gb of data from the bug and flamed Microsoft on his blog back in January. Will proclaims Home Server 2008 not ready for public use and says he probably won't try it again until the 2.0 version, if then.

If your home server doesn't have more than one hard drive, the software appears to be safe. But let's face it - people who have home servers typically have large storage requirements that quickly extend behind a single server-attached hard drive - particularly when photos or videos are involved. (Note that Microsoft's own software is what crashes the thing - and some of these products are actually geared for the home, too.)
