Salary survey says CCIE salary slipping

In a provocatively headlined blog, TechRepublic Executive Editor Jason Hiner writes that "Cisco's CCIE is no longer the biggest cash cow of IT certification." According to the Web site's 2008 IT Skills and Salary Report conducted in association with training firm Global Knowledge, Cisco's highest accolade for network engineers is the fifth highest-earning certification for IT professionals, following PMI Project Management Professional (PMP), PMI Certified Associate in Project Management, ITIL v. 2 - Foundation, and (ISC)2's Certified Information Systems Security Professional.

It's difficult to say how much of a slip this is for the Cisco Certified Internet Expert certification as the survey doesn't provide comparisions to previous years. But the results appear to gel with what Network World has been reporting in recent pasts - that employers are seeking IT pros with business-oriented skills in such areas as project management and Six Sigma.

According to the survey, PMPs command an average salary of $101,695, compared to $93,500 for a CCIE Routing & Switching expert.

but 935000 sounds a whole lot more than 101695. I'll take the CCIE job at $935000 any day....

So, what if you have multiple, like CCIE, CISSP, and PMP?

Not Additive! :)

Unfortunately, if you have multiple certifications they are not additive in salary. While that would be way cool, it would also price many people out of the market!

Due to many economic reasons, the market only bears so much and its not necessarily good to charge more than that!

But on the other hand, experience plus multiple certifications may add SOME additional salary, and DOES add significantly to the ability of getting jobs/contracts!

Too many zeros

Whoops. It appears it is all too easy to add too many zeros in a story but alas not to my salary file in HR. I've corrected the blog posting.

Thanks for noticing the error.

CCIE is just Cisco's way of planting the seed

The Best clients in this crazy IT world are the ones that have a person on site from your company. In the case of CCIE's that is Cisco's way of planting a person on site that the Cisco Engineer can communicate with and confide in. I can tell you on several occasions the information provided to the customer in confidence magically got back to Cisco. Amazing how that happens. And try to argue a logical point with the Cisco CCIE Clones...all they know is how Cisco does it and they will not listen to anything else.

Most CCIE's are well into $150K to 175K

A brand new CCIE perhaps, but most CCIE's are well into $150K to $175K and also hold MCSE, RHE, CISSP, and have 10 years of IOS skills and customer facing skills to offer. That sa;aru number is too low. Try to find one at that wage and you will have a long wait!

Bring the salary up to $170 range and you will be able to find a CCIE ready to get to work for you.

I am very active in the area

I am very active in the area of recruitment of CCIEs internationally. In fact I have done salary surveys within my large database of CCIEs for various employers in different countries. In recent days I have been involved in offers that went out to CCIEs in the Northeastern United States and they are not anywhere as low as the quoted salary in this article. If you survey CCIEs with less than 3 years of experience you will see base salaries in the 80k – 100k base but the incentives offered by many Cisco Partners include on top of the base may include annual performance bonuses, commissions and certification bonuses. When you review the salaries of CCIEs with more than 3 years of hands on industry experience the base salaries become a lot more complicated and higher. If the CCIE has Unified Communications experience then the salaries go through the roof and I recently saw a package worth more than $170k for a CCIE with heavy voice experience. Security focused CCIEs are also well paid and competing for higher packages. R/S CCIEs are what me and my peers call plumbers and these network plumbers can command high salaries depending on their level of experience, employer and skills. I have employed PMPs and various levels of Client Server professionals and have not seen the consistently high wages that the CCIEs command. In this time of technological and economic challenges as in the 80s a smart engineer can move into a great salaried role on their own initiative. After all you are worth whatever you can convince an employer to pay! See my blog www.ccieagent.com for more insight.

I can not agree more with

I can not agree more with Eman.
Is this speaking about salary figures from 2-3 years ago? Most the opportunities available today are 150-170k depending on which or how many CCIE certs you hold and the kind of customer facing skills you have. I have heard of CCVP's getting over 100k. One constant has to be remembered, the CCIE need to constantly be learning. Think back to what the 1st CCIE's had to do, now the current ones have to know more than just routing and switching. They cover Wireless, QOS, Voice, Security just to name a few. This is not a knock on the Pioneers but more to show that once you attain the certification your skills must constantly be improved. A CCIE may have had to learn 802.11n last year and WAAS this yr just to stay current. I do not see this kind of constant retraining with in the PMP field and as such do not see this relevant discussion. Let me know what 100k PMP can do for you when your network is down or you can't get to the internet....

Average figures often lie

I cannot agree more with the reports and feedback that salary levels quoted being very low than normal.

I have found that 'average' figures tend to hide a lot beneath. Averages are a statistics figure depending on sample size and sample bias. Everywhere I see average figures quoted they tend to mask the real condition; salaries, house prices, etc etc..

Can someone point this out to those who carry out surveys?
