Steve Ballmer is starting to hint that Microsoft just might not pull off a merger with Yahoo, is he? Well, that's
exactly what Yahoo wants. Or rather, Yahoo wouldn't mind a merger partner, so long as that partner isn't Microsoft. And who could blame Yahoo? The likelihood that Microsoft would simply assimilate customers and walk away is huge. Microsoft is still operating from the dominate-or-be-dominated attitude from the client/server era from which it was born. Yahoo, Google and other Internet companies operate from an open, collaborative point-of-view -- and the two don't mix well. We'll see if Microsoft mounts a proxy fight, or spends its energies developing Live, Mesh and other next-gen technologies. The IT market would be better off it did the latter.
