Why WiMAX

It is not clear, and this article sheds no light, what the benefits to the end user are of WiMax over EV-DO. Even EV-DO service has been hampered by the incredible lack of customer support provided by Sprint and the FAP policy and practices of Verizon, neither of which make them attractive for corporate endorsement or use.

Manufacturers weren't going to commit to building devices for which there was no network. Clearwire, in shoring up its financial footing, can now encourage manufacturers to come forward with new device offerings.

Intel envisions that WiMAX chips will be in every laptop, just as WiFi is today.

It would be instructive to see what WiMAX devices are available in more mature overseas markets such as Australia, India, and South Korea.

WiMAX devices and XOHM !

What the Sceptics of WiMAX have seen so far is mostly the fixed version of WiMAX.There are too many differences in the Mobile WiMAX technology, which has improved on the shortcomings of Fixed WiMAX that few are now deploying it if the mobile WiMAX option is available. It is true that there have been delays in getting the certified devices, but that phase is over now.
Mobile WiMAX permits mobile or fixed devices to transmit only the required number of subcarriers thereby extending the range, has multiple antenna support and mulicast/ broadcast services(MBS). The MBS services alone can make it a killer technology.
None of the existing technologies such as EV-DO or HSPA comes even close to what mobile WiMAX can deliver. The spectrum costs are lower, it is available and sorely needed for the wide bandwidth applications which are the norm today. Google with its YouTube, Google earth and Image based search engines and desktops can don a new color if this connectivity is available.
