I've tried many of the generic media boxes. A laptop (2.0Ghz CPU, XP, 1 GB RAM) plays movies just fine using Windows Media Player. HDTV 720p in XVID may require a faster laptop or hardware decoder. Make the computer display with big fonts, add a wireless mouse, and you got yourself a very usable entertainment center. I definitely recommend wired versus wireless. The latency in wireless makes skipping around a video cumbersome.
