try looking into SPF, which applies to people sending email as your domain. it would be nice to see you write an article on that topic, as it is similar in nature. and altough I do not read all of your articles, you are one that I look fo when i have time to read some of the 300 subscriptions that I receive. Machines talking to machines - or eliza2(squared)

Reminds me of a piece of performance art from the early 1990's - 2 cp/m machines running Eliza connected by a null modem cable. GIGO (garbage in = garbage out.

Seriously, without the catchall account I wouldn't know that some imaginary user in my domain sent some piece of garbage to a bunch of people? and a whole lot of firewalls, mailservers, autorepliers, etc. responded (some rather indignantly). Catchall has become my window into emerging trends.

The new reality is that you end up silently discarding stuff without creating more traffic, so the spammers try to bypass this by setting up messages to bounce off some other mailserver so the sysadmin will actually read it. These come in bursts, so it's a tipoff to see 200 returns for the same user.

The latest wrinkle in the spam fight is the recently posted "The Perfect SpamSnake" on HowToForge - it even has OCR filters!
