Introductions, and Confessions of a Datacenter Junkie.

By mhalligan on Tue, 06/10/08 - 4:07am.

Greetings, and hello!

I thought I'd take a moment to introduce myself, before I begin spewing out content as fast as this blog can take it.

My name is Michael T. Halligan. I'm currently an owner, and Chief Technology Officer at BitPusher, LLC which provides Managed Application Hosting to startups and mid-sized companies. I'm in the process of transitioning my role at BitPusher away from the technical side, and primarily towards Business Development. Outside of BitPusher I'm pursuing a few new start-up ideas, including one providing services to the convention industry, and several new web tools for datacenter managers.

I've been working in this industry for over 12-years (16 if you count part-time jobs while I was still in school). In a previous life, I've run a consulting company focused on early-staged startups, as well as worked in various infrastructure roles at start-ups such as Kontiki, Napster, and Register.com

For the past few years, my primary blog has been my LiveJournal, but I recently decided to separate my industry blogging to WordPress. Upon this announcement, Jeff Caruso asked me if I'd be willing to blog about the datacenter industry here at NetworkWorld. Since NetworkWorld is one of the few weekly rags that I actually read, I jumped at the opportunity!

I love datacenters. I've been around them for 2/3 of my life. Name a commercial datacenter in the West Coast or North East, I've probably been in it either while consulting, or evaluating for customer needs. Sometimes, my eyes get larger than my checking account, and I even consider building one. Alas, reality kicks in, so researching & writing about them is the next best thing.

Since I am lucky enough to be able to write about a huge market I'm so passionate about, I already have a lot of ideas for where I'll be taking this blog. So far, here's my list of list of focuses and topics to expect over the next few weeks:

  • Emerging trends in the Managed Hosting market
  • Interviews with owners and operators of innovative and noteworthy industry leaders
  • Impacts of the cloud on the colocation, managed datacenter, and virtual hosting industry
  • News and Gossip about new facility planning, , Mergers & Acquisitions
  • Coverage of Industry Events and Tradeshows
  • Related product discussions and evaluations (did I mention I have my own datacenter test lab in Seattle?)
  • Photo and possibly Video tours of datacenters I visit.

Please contact me if you've got news on any industry events, new happenings, or products you'd like me to write about. I am very accessible (stalkable). Go to http://halligan.org/ for my long list of hcard entries, including Twitter, LinkedIn, and Plaxo.
