A website set up to gather insider information on corporations - notably salaries and what the work environment is like - has high praise for Cisco, so far. The beta site for
glassdoor.com launched yesterday, and posted its early findings based on limited responses from visitors. Cisco itself earns a 4.3 out of 5 which gives it an overall employee rating of "very satisfied."
For instance, one Cisco senior hardware engineer posted these comments:
"Like any big company, your job experience at Cisco will vary from group to group. The ideal situation in Cisco is to join a group which already has good mix of engineers at every level, and a strong upwardly mobile manager who trusts you and manages upwards well. If you can find this opportunity, and perform well, you will have the best career prospects. That said, the best thing about working for Cisco might just be that you if you are a competent and productive engineer, you have quite a bit of flexibility in defining your role and your contribution level ... The down-side of working at Cisco is that the salary is not great. And promotions & bonuses can get very competitive at the senior level. So, if [you] end up in a group that is over-loaded with good people at your level and above, then you can get stuck in a situation where you are working hard but not getting enough rewards, bonus, or visibility."
As for rating the boss, Cisco CEO John Chambers did quite well with a 93% approval rating from respondents. That's a lot better than Yahoo! CEO Jerry Yang did with 58%. This is likely to change over time as more people respond to the survey. As of this posting, the site had just 43 results from respondents commenting on Cisco.
glassdoor.com is set up to let employees post salaries and reviews of corporations' environments and leaders and to view those results for other companies. Access to the data is free, but in order to view it, visitors must post like information about their own salaries and employers.
