Boss asked the other day what I thought of the Associated Press copyright infringment claim against a Web site that basically does what I'm doing now: summarize, excerpt from and link to interesting stuff. "Total BS," I replied via e-mail, only I spelled out BS. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has an analysis of the issue here that is basically a more detailed and insightful way of saying what I said.

Associated Press doesn't get to dictate Fair Use
The AP clearly wants to control the news; and wants the internet to conform to their wishes and old business model.
It's a new age - and if AP can't get with the program and embrace the new media, then they deserve to get left behind.
There are just too many news sources out there to let one old-school bully control the flow of information in any way.
copyright claims
We are having the same discussion over at the university pertaining to using copyrighted materials in our teaching. The Administration of course is scared to death of a lawsuit. So they want us to make sure that when teaching "outside the book" we use only original material in our lectures. Original material! Does this mean I have to do all my on research and experimentation too? I propose we all have to go underground.
