While the Cisco-buys-EMC rumors are interesting, it would downright surprising if Cisco really took on that deal. As Chambers says, the company doesn't need to own a technology when it can partner with a the market leader. The only reason to buy is to grab a lot of engineering talent in a high-margin, up-and-coming market where Cisco could dominate. (One could argue that the Scientific Atlanta acquisition didn't fit the mold, but that doesn't mean that Cisco has thrown out the mold altogether.) Storage and server virtualization are not either of those things -- high margin or up-and-coming.
In fact, VMware will be facing a BIG fight soon with Microsoft on the server virtualization front when Hyper-V ships this month. VMware has got plenty of oomph to compete, but its days of being a monopoly are over. Why would Cisco want to own that?

It would be stupid for Cisco to play favorites and disenfranchis
It would be stupid for Cisco to play favorites and disenfranchise the other vendors that do not currently compete with Cisco. In areas like storage and OS virtualization where Cisco is presently vendor neutral, why pick up "enemies" or take sides when it is not a part of your core business?
Rumors about Cisco/Uplogix discussions
The Cisco Live! and Gartner trade shows this past week generated some rumers about discussions with Uplogix. Secure remote management is gaining ground and the Uplogix solution is the most robust.
