Where have we seen this before?
Microsoft undercutting the competition by giving their product away and supporting it with sales from the Office/Windows monopoly? It's more likely than you think. Much more likely.
I use
VMWare server I have 5 instances of it with about 17 virutal machines running. I run it ontop of fedora so I have these systems for the cost of the guest license and hardware.
Free?
Have you looked at the price of Windows Server 2008? It's like the surprise in the cereal box.
Exactly
Hyper-v is NOT Free, not by a long shot. The real scoop:
Hyper-v = 1 2008 license + $28
ESXi = $495
Which is cheaper?
If you are going to use hyper-v for VMs then that's what it is being used for thus you are dedicating a 2008 license which costs at least double of ESXi.
Where's this free thing the MS lemmings keep talking about?
Is the media that stupid? I guess so. Google search free+ hyper-v for a few laughs.
The people shelling out the cash for whatever solution they decide on will know what's really going on. After all money talks and we know what walks...
Just a thought...
Alot of you are forgetting that with Windows 2008, you are permitted to run up to 4 instances of the OS for FREE in the virtual space for each Host server license. So 5 copies of Windows 2008 for the price of 1.
Last time I checked, a copy of ESX was $1500+, and you still had to pay for your host OS.
Add to that the heavy discounts they toss to Government and Educational outfits, and you have one seriously cheap solution.
Almost...
But then you still have to license the OSs running in VMs on VMWare. If you have Server 2008 enterprise you can run 4 VMs of Server at no additional cost. If you buy Data Center there is no limit on the number of VM's you can run at no additional cost.
