Sybase has filed a federal patent infringement lawsuit against Vertica.
This will make it impossible for Vertica to indemnify their potential clients in their software license agreements against patent infringement and hence impossible to create perpetual license agreements which will impact their ability to recognize revenue.
In its complaint Sybase accused Vertica of willfully infringing the patent, both literally and under the doctrine of equivalents, through the sale of its Vertica Database.
Potential customers will have to consider the possibility that Vertica will have to re-write it’s solution or pay royalties to Sybase.
