Apple sells 1 million new iPhones; 10 million apps downloaded

Despite their opening-day glitches, Apple and AT&T were still able to sell more than 1 million iPhone 3G units over the weekend, Apple said in a press release this morning. Still, I gotta wonder how many of those units actually ended up in the hands of the buyers, as my "sold" iPhone is currently on backorder with the fine folks from AT&T (at least the peppy e-mails from "icare@Cingular.com" continue to give me the bad news).

In typical Jobsian fashion, Apple CEO Steve Jobs pointed out that it took 74 days to sell the first 1 million iPhones, so this version must be better because they sold so many of them so quickly (discounting the fact that they probably made more initially this time around). Still, selling 1 million of anything over a weekend is pretty impressive, so some props to Apple on getting that done.

Even more impressive is the 10 million downloads of applications from the App Store. Apple says more than 800 native applications are available at the App Store, with more than 200 offered for free, and 90% at $10 or less. I'm already seeing a lot of enterprise vendors showing interest in porting existing apps or building new apps for the iPhone and iPhone 3G, so you can't just say that the apps on the App Store are just consumer-focused.
