Cisco How-To Tutorials

Connectionless Network Service (CLNS) protocol is an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard which operates at the network layer of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model.

IP is an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) defined standard which operates at the Internetwork layer of the TCP/IP protocol stack.

To connect IP networks separated by a pure CLNS network, IP traffic has to be tunneled across the CLNS network.

Two IP networks can be connected across an CLNS network by using the IP over a CLNS Tunnel feature.

To configure the IP over a CLNS Tunnel, perform these steps:

1. Create a virtual interface on routers at the edge of the IP network by issuing the interface ctunnel command in global configuration mode.
2. Set an IP address for the tunnel interface by issuing the ip address command in interface configuration mode.
3. Specify the tunnel's remote-end peer by its Network Service Access Point (NSAP) address by issuing the ctunnel destination command in interface configuration mode.

For more information on configuring the IP over a CLNS Tunnel feature refer to:
