Terry Childs

OK so Terry gave them the passwords. So what is it he is charged with, "Failure to give the passwords to someone who thought he should give them to him in a timely manner?" Seems like the "terrorist tactics" all belong to the IT Management team and the DA.... Clearly, the San Francisco DA will want to make a big deal about this, but I doubt it will work out well for the city, the DA or Terry in the long run.... Ms. Harris are you reading this?

Fair Trail

I think he should demand that at least one network engineer be on the jury. Very few other people would be able to understand the line of thought, motivation, and reality that he works in.

Cisico Routers and Switches

If the IT manager is knowledgeable regarding Cisco technology, he would have 2 options.
Option 1 - Consult with Cisco System Engineers to be able to do a password recovery.
Option 2 - There is a Cisco tool that can crack router's and switches password.
No big deal.

CDC986 from Downunder

I guess he proved his managers are morons.

Good thing he didn't get hit by a bus! How can you let one person hold the keys. I can understand a mom and pop shop not knowing any better, but this large of an organization. What a joke!

Mayor convinced Childs?

0

San Francisco Chronicle has it a bit differently. They report it as Childs contacting the mayor and offering him the passwords. He went to the jail and got them.

Your version sounds like the Mayor decided to try to appeal to Childs on his own, and managed to convince him to provide the passwords.

No deals were cut. The volunteering of the passwords by Childs was cited during a bail hearing; bail was not actually reduced.

Worst Practice Example

0

One guy has the keys to the kingdom. That is nutty and an example of worst practices in network management. As a manager of a larger network than City of SF, we use Cisco ACS to manage access to the Cisco network. Passwords are known to all the technical staff responsible for supporting the Cisco network. The ACS server has an admin and a back up admin. Like the previous commentor said, he proved his bosses were morons.
