Networking now a two-horse race

Juniper's solid second quarter results announced yesterday has given analysts a glimmer of hope in the softening economy. Juniper's results beat consensus estimates as the Cisco rival posted an increase in sales of 32% and a leap in profit of 40%. Juniper also boosted  its outlook for the third quarter and the rest of the year.

Calling it a two-horse race between Cisco and Juniper, Sean Udall, who previously managed assets at Morgan Stanley and Smith Barney, writes in Minyanville: "Juniper and Cisco are benefiting from the muted economic conditions, since they keep component pricing low. This helps quell any rising competition and gives their stable stock prices (and massive balance sheets), greater currency to invest in promising technology and startups."

He adds: "Given my vision of the future landscape in bandwidth, storage and data center investment (articulated in prior Buzzes and articles), we're setting up for a strong or even exceptionally powerful networking cycle with just the two current networking giants (along with Huawei) essentially having the field to themselves."

Nortel not Juniper primary contender against Cisco enterprise

Sean may be right that it is a two horse race in carrier networks, but no way can Juniper be given the crown in enterprise. Nortel has good momentum in this area winnning against Cisco; we don't see much of Juniper who may be having challenges transtioning into this different space.
