Liveblogging HostingCon Day1 (#hostingcon) morning track.

HostingCon-Kevin-Gold (1 of 1)

9:33 Today began with an awesome mile walk in the sun. The navy pier is a huge tourist trap that we found ourselves happily lost-in. The directions to HostingCon weren't entirely clear, but we eventually found our way here.

Groggily finding cold water was complex. There was plenty of hot coffee and donuts, though. Decided to go to the Social Marketing Track for the first session. I'm cutting it short at 10:00 AM to interview Serguei Beloussov, CEO of Parallels.

Kevin Gold from iNET Interactive (WebHostingTalk) is talking right now. He's got a slight Pittsburgh accent. Clearly a trained and experienced speaker. His topic is essentially "Social Media 101" for people in the hosting industry.

Interesting statistics:

  • 14% of people polled trust advertising.
  • 78% of people trust the recommendations of others
  • 34% of people post opinions about products and brands on their blogs.
  • WebHostingTalk has over 130,000 active users.

Kevin suggests every hosting company should have a video-based datacenter tour, as well as an interview with your CEO. He stresses not just to give a generic interview, but rather to discuss specific problems your company solves, and recommended solutions. Include videos that show what the customer experience is going to be like. Post the videos to Google or YouTube to tap new vectors of interest.

Great content, but it's time to run.

10:00 AM Heading out to meet up with Parllels.
