Cisco PIX last day today

Today is the last day you can purchase a PIX firewall appliance from Cisco, ending one of the longest and  most successful lives of a gateway security product ever, writes Richard Stiennon in his Stiennon on Security blog. Cisco is discontinuing the line in favor of its ASA 5500 appliances, which were launched in 2006. The ASA 5500s support firewall and VPN just like the PIX but with better performance, SSL VPN support, VoIP security, reports Network World's Tim Greene. Support for PIX will cease July 27, 2013.

Also for the chop this week is Cisco's IDS 4215 Sensor, which is going to be replaced by the company's ASA IPS product with Advanced Inspection and Prevention Security Services Module AIP-SSM-10. While the sensor's end-of-sale date is July 29, the last day of support is July 28, 2013, according to Cisco.
