Can Cabletron + Rolm really make a dent?

Ok, so maybe I am showing my age... one quarter of what was once Cabletron (Enterasys) and Siemens (Rolm) have apparently shacked up together.

It's probably a good move for both, as Enterasys has almost no voice presence and Siemens is weak on data despite their numerous entries into the VoIP market.

Some of Siemens most interesting businesses however probably won't go with the deal. Their energy, industrial, and consumer capabilities are extremely impressive. In addition, their Healthcare business is extensive - they even manufacture modalities. It was only the Enterprise Communications Group that got thrown into the pot.

Will these two mid-ranked "on the radar" contenders create a synergistic miracle child to compete with the likes of Nortel, Cisco and Avaya? Who knows.

It may change some of the global standings though... After all, the Germans now have a "home team" to root for in the data center.
