Forget about the issues of uptime, downtime and the fact that a lot of the A-list bloggers have "quit" Twittering (or whatever they say they're doing, I tend to ignore them). The real reason people might want to move away from Twitter is that corporations are now starting to get onto the system.
And not just the cool ones, like @JetBlue or @comcastcares, which use Twitter to provide updates and to do some customer service. Today's entrant to the Twitterverse is Dell, which plans to answer questions from reporters and customers in real-time during their global news conference, which starts in about 2 hours (9 a.m. PDT, 12 p.m. EDT). Tweeters (Tweeple?) can go to http://www.twitter.com/Digital_Nomads and direct their questions about Dell's "Global Mobility Event", which will include computers with "fresh and innovative designs".
If you're that excited about new Dell computers and notebooks, make sure you check out the feed.

Moving on from Twitter
After all the downtime in the past month, I simply got bored with checking on it, so I stopped using it. Jakob Nielsen is SO right...
