Virus attacks highest ever in July, Google says

With two Gmail outages in as many weeks, perhaps it's time that Google turned its attention to e-mail security, specifically e-mail viruses. The company posted notes on both the Google Online Security Blog and on Google's Enterprise Blog saying that this July was hands-down the worst for virus attacks and noted that on July 24 alone, Google's Postini servers encountered nearly 10 million virus-laden messages.

Still, the company claims its "zero-hour virus protection" caught them before they could wreak havoc across enterprises. Two types of e-mail Google warned against were one with a spoofed UPS package-tracking link, and another posing as a CNN newsletter but containing malicious links. They also warned against spam containing encrypted .RAR attachments.

IT execs looking for more information on protecting their enterprises from attacks can register for a Webinar Google is holding on Friday, Aug. 15 at 10 a.m. PT.
