The National Science Foundation has awarded grants to 4 different computer research teams under a new program called Expeditions in Computing. The project that appears most relevant to enterprise network pros is one called the Open Programmable Mobile Internet 2020 project, and is led by Nick McKeown of Stanford University (we interviewed McKeown last year about his Clean Slate Design for the Internet Project, which included elements of what will be the focus of this new mobility project). The wireless project will focus on openness of devices, networks and applications, and attempt to make mobile computing more simple than it is today and ensure different mobile technologies can co-exist peacefully.

Other winning projects include those focused on Molecular Programming, Computational Intractability and using computing technology to help sustain the earth's resources.
