MacArthur fellows advancing quantum and optical computing

By Alpha Doggs on Fri, 10/03/08 - 2:34pm.

The MacArthur Foundation recently announced its 2008 class of fellows. The 25 big thinkers each get $500,000 over the life of a five-year grant, according to an FAQ on the foundation's site. Sculptors, doctors and farmers are among the winners, and so are a couple of people whose work more or less falls into networking.

* Alexei Kitaev is a physicist/computer scientist whose work could result in advances in quantum computing.

* Marin Soljacic, according to the foundation, "is a young theoretical physicist whose work on several aspects of electromagnetic waves holds important implications for understanding fundamental principles of optical physics and for development of devices such as switches for optical computers and wireless power transmitters."
