Cisco confirmed that it is to lay off 129 jobs at its Richardson, Texas facility. The company filed a letter with the Texas Workforce Commission that the staff reductions would be happening, reports the Dallas Business Journal. The job cuts are part of a decision to halt operations within its Broadband Telephony Services unit at the facility, the Journal reports and the cuts will occur between Oct. 8 and Dec. 8. Cisco said the layoffs are not related to the troubled economy. In a statement, the company says it "continuously evaluates its businesses to align human and capital resources to address key growth opportunities and improve efficiency."

The Dallas facility is the site of Cisco's newest data center, which opened in June. Cisco declined to give further details of the layoffs or explain what is included in its Broadband Telephony Service, but a reader of GigaOm's report of the news commented that the affected could be what was left of Cisco's 2000 acquisition of Richardson-based IPCell Technologies. That company provided software for broadband access networks combining IP and telephony services. Some 110 IPCell employees moved to Cisco's service provider business after the acquisition.

Cisco's statement adds: "As part of our ongoing business processes, Cisco continually prioritizes its resource allocations to properly align those resources with revenue generation, profit growth, and market share opportunities, positioning itself for long-term sustainable growth."

As the company moves into its new fiscal year, are more cuts on the horizon for Cisco's non-performing sectors?
