Thousands of people who downloaded RealDVD on a 30-day trial basis are now officially SOL.
After launching the product at Network World's DEMOfall 08 on Sept. 8, RealNetworks has had nothing but legal trouble with its DVD-to-PC copying software, which a court has ordered mothballed for now. In an open letter (.pdf) from Real Networks posted today, the company laments the fact that its customers are paying the price as it and the movie industry do battle in court.
You shouldn't be caught in the middle, and we apologize that you are. As a thank you for your patience we will upgrade your trial to a fully licensed copy, free of charge, if we are legally allowed to resume distribution of RealDVD.
This fight wasn't exactly hard to see coming, although that's little solace to those who spent time getting RealDVD acquainted with their movie collections.
