Migrating to SLES from Red Hat

I'm afraid that Novell is not going to have too many people switching from Red Hat to Linux with their current SLES (SLES10U2) offering. I've been working with SLES10U2 extensively, and from installation to use, SLES 10 is getting long in the tooth compared to Red Hat Enterprise 5.
(Even the kernel is two versions behind Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.)
Open SuSe 11 looks very promising, and as soon as Novell moves to SLES 11, a change from Red Hat could be considered.

Another Novell failure in the making

Novell has totally lost the plot. I cannot see companies going for sort of thing. In fact, the .edu I work for has replaced a large SUSE Linux cluster with CentOS.

Fail !

I would not switch if they paid me $3,748 per server.
This is exactly the kind of thing that keeps me away from Novell products.
Instead of going for the UNIX and Windows market they are turning on the community.
Bad move and even more bad PR.
I dont use and never will use their products.

Why would anyone do that ?

Don't knock it until you try it.

I haven't had much experience with Red Hat, but I do know it's a strong product. In repsonse to "Another Novell Failure in the making", I totally disagree. We just implemented a Novell/SLES10 cluster and it runs smoothly and effeciently. The internal migration tools Novell offers to migrate from their older products are very easy to use and get the job done. If the migration tools from Red Hat to SUSE are anything like these than I don't see why someone wouldn't make the switch. I do agree however that SUSE11 looks to be a large jump from SUSE10 and will make things better for Novell's OES products.

From a business perspective!

How can you say this will fail? That is short sighted and uninformed post. Would you prefer no competition in the "paid for" Linux space? I am not too sure that would help the over all Linux marketplace.

Fact of the matter is, Novell does a better job at supporting Linux than Red Hat. I have owned RH for years and recently switched to Novell. Not only is their cost much, much better than Red Hat (I saved over 60%) - but my team tells me they actually do a better job with technical support (in terms of response time and resolution time). I will go as far as saying that Novell is supporting and has supported my RHEL environment better that red hat has done. They are much less arrogant and we generally a better experience across the board.

So let's be clear, I get a better price and a better service with Novell. Why would you not look into this? How can you say this is bad? This is good for Linux in general (let's face it - Linux is Linux) and a move from one Linux to another does not hurt the community. In fact, I believe it strengthens the community as a whole, and gives us buyers more of a choice.
