Cisco CEO John Chambers is named as one of '10 tech people you should know', as compiled by Network World. Other 'power-brokers' listed whose decisions could shape enterprise IT for years to come include Paul Maritz, VMware CEO, Mike Neil, general manager of virtualization strategy, Microsoft. and John Lilly, CEO, Mozilla. Network World notes that Cisco means a lot more than switching these days, as Cisco saw increases in its fiscal quarter that ended Oct. 25 to its unified communications, video systems and wireless businesses. Network World also notes that Cisco's experiences in navigating past economic slowdowns puts it in a good position to ride out this current one.
Meanwhile, former CEO high-flyer Jayshree Ullal's Arista Networks is named as one of 10 start-ups to watch in '09. Ullal most recently ran Cisco's $10 billion Data Center, Switching and Services Group, and her experience could prove crucial as Arista (formerly known as Arastra) challenges Cisco for switching supremacy. Arista will try to lure customers with blazing-fast switches that pack 48 10Gig Ethernet ports into one rack unit for a relatively inexpensive $400 per port. Read about the other start-ups to watch here.
