In moving forward on his technology agenda, President-elect Obama appears close to appointing Cisco Chief Technology Officer (CTO) - Padmasree Warrior to the newly created position of U.S. CTO.
In the opinion of yours truly, that would be a huge win for Cisco, but a total disaster for America, why?
Because Cisco gets to dump its incompetent executive deadwood on the American public, while creating untold conflicts of interest with an incompetent U.S. CTO beholden to a former employer, the largest networking technology vendor in the United States.
Heck, President George W. Bush has an impressive resume too, but would you hire the guy? Don't be shy now, tell us if you would hire him and why!
To be fair to Cisco, I requested a response regarding the following two questions:
| 1. | Does Cisco see any potential conflicts of interest in the appointment of Cisco's CTO as the new U.S. CTO, if not why, if yes - what are they? |
| 2. | What "exactly" has Padmasree Warrior accomplished at Cisco that would make her qualified to be the new U.S. CTO |
Cisco specifically chose not to respond to my above two questions.
However, Cisco did respond to me by reiterating twice the following quote by Warrior that also appeared in BusinessWeek.
"I'd prefer not to comment on President-Elect Obama's choice of Chief Technology Officer for the administration. Cisco is committed to working closely with the Obama Administration on their plans to deploy digital infrastructure to grow our economy and create jobs. Smart networking technologies and IT play a critical role in transforming government, energy, education and healthcare. President-elect Obama and his team fully understand the importance of digital infrastructure to further our technology leadership as a nation," said Padmasree Warrior.
Other than flying around the world giving "keynotes" at technology conferences, yours truly can't find a single thing that Warrior has accomplished as the CTO of Cisco. We all know about the disaster that happened to Motorola under her leadership as CTO, and that she jumped ship to Cisco afer her protector at Motorola - CEO Ed Zander resigned.
Would love to hear your take on the following:
At the 3:10 timeline in the video below, Padmasree Warrior pontificates that companies will win when they move from "Brainstorm" to what Warrior calls "Brainform". Don't be shy, what portion of her pontification resonated the most with you?
Update:
On the White House website, President Obama's technology agenda states:
"Appoint the nation's first Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to ensure the safety of our networks and lead an interagency effort, working with chief technology and chief information officers of each of the federal agencies, to ensure that they use best-in-class technologies and share best practices."
