In his research note to yours truly today, RBC Capital Markets Managing Director - Mark Sue surprisingly states:
"Considering its big push into the consumer market, we believe Cisco may
be developing a smartphone of its own, slated for mid 2010."
That's quite remarkable news given Cisco CTO Padmasree Warrior's infamous "morning after blog" denigrating the announcement of the Apple iPhone. Nonetheless, Cisco has been very successful in Hollywood reaching consumers with its IP Phone product placement initiatives, most recently in the new hit movie executive produced by Drew Barrymore:
Furthermore, Cisco appears to be achieving new consumer visibility and awareness with its exciting Valentine's Day gift promotion.

Seriously, should Apple, Microsoft and Research In Motion be worried?

Speculating on the Cisco phone on Twitter
@venture37, one of my Twitter people (Tweeps), sent me this funny string of Tweets in contemplation of a Cisco smartphone, which I wanted to share with you. He wrote:
"ok, [let's pretend] they've had a succesfull run at product placement. Now how many kids do you see drooling for a 7960 IP phone next xmas?? Looking at their past history I predict if they do come out with one, it'll have a poor interface. It'll only work properly when talking to another Cisco phone due to proprietary protocols, tech, etc. It'll probably be running IOS. The basic model will allow you to dial numbers, you could get a feature upgrade to all you to talk to when the other person answers. If their normal IP phones, e.g. 7960, is anything to go by it'll look pretty, cost lots & do half the things a normal phone can do."

Cisco phone - engineer or executive?
I would love it to run IOS and allow me to monitor my core network without having to carry my laptop with me all the time. Ah, the power of dreams...
However, as smartphones are still geared for executives I fear it will just become another "bling" gadget for some CEOs to show off while golfing. ;)
Another year waiting for me. Windows mobile is still the way to go for smartphones, as crappy as WinMobile is, the others are worse if you try to get work done with them.
