Update 4/8/09:
Good news, Cisco renewed its domain name today, but only for 1 year.
As shown below by whois.internic.net, the Cisco.com domain name is about to expire soon on May 15. No doubt Cisco will pay the bill for its domain before the expiration date -- but it's an interesting situation that the company would let its valuable domain name get so close to expiring.
Yours truly finds this of interest because of my firsthand knowledge regarding the Holiday Inn domain name fiasco. George Yerich Sr. - who bought the Skylon Tower that my father financed, built and formerly co-owned, registered the HolidayInn.com domain name back in 1995. Eleven long years later in 2006, Holiday Inn finally bought its own domain name after it was forced to pay Yerich $3 million to get it.
According to Network Solutions - the registrar of the Cisco.com domain name, it appears that all of the domain name extensions of cisco are taken, however, it's interesting to note that many of the taken cisco extensions are not owned by Cisco:
NameJet - a domain name aftermarket auction company that consolidates expired and deleted domains from Network Solutions and makes them available for auction, provides an in-depth tutorial below on the Domain Name Life Cycle and how a third party would go about bidding for the Cisco.com domain name should it expire without being renewed by Cisco on May 15:
Since Holiday Inn was forced to pay $3 million for its domain name, how much do you think Cisco would pay to get its domain name back? Theoretically speaking of course!
