Update 4/8/09:
Good news, Cisco renewed its domain name today, but only for 1 year.
As shown below by whois.internic.net, the Cisco.com domain name is about to expire soon on May 15. No doubt Cisco will pay the bill for its domain before the expiration date -- but it's an interesting situation that the company would let its valuable domain name get so close to expiring.
Yours truly finds this of interest because of my firsthand knowledge regarding the Holiday Inn domain name fiasco. George Yerich Sr. - who bought the Skylon Tower that my father financed, built and formerly co-owned, registered the HolidayInn.com domain name back in 1995. Eleven long years later in 2006, Holiday Inn finally bought its own domain name after it was forced to pay Yerich $3 million to get it.
According to Network Solutions - the registrar of the Cisco.com domain name, it appears that all of the domain name extensions of cisco are taken, however, it's interesting to note that many of the taken cisco extensions are not owned by Cisco:
NameJet - a domain name aftermarket auction company that consolidates expired and deleted domains from Network Solutions and makes them available for auction, provides an in-depth tutorial below on the Domain Name Life Cycle and how a third party would go about bidding for the Cisco.com domain name should it expire without being renewed by Cisco on May 15:
Since Holiday Inn was forced to pay $3 million for its domain name, how much do you think Cisco would pay to get its domain name back? Theoretically speaking of course!

huh?
why does this article exist? it has no purpose - everyone's domain name must be renewed. you must have been really scraping your brain for something to write here, unless Cisco has *something* to do with recycled domain names and lifecycles of such, which i obviously have to doubt.
cheers
signed, confused
Failure to renew domain names has become a big industry today!
It appears that the failure to renew domain names has turned into a big industry today.
Other than Google or Microsoft, can you think of a domain name that would be more valuable than Cisco.com?

I would imagine they have
I would imagine they have auto-renew on their domain name, and they are probably billed one month prior to expiration, which would still be 10 days away.
It appears that Cisco does not have Auto Renew
According to Network Solutions:
Special rules apply to the domains below which require that they be renewed prior to their expiration date.
FAILURE TO RENEW YOUR REGISTERED DOMAIN NAME PRIOR TO ITS EXPIRATION DATE (ACCORDING TO THE TIME TABLE BELOW) MAY RESULT IN THE LOSS OF YOUR REGISTERED DOMAIN NAME.*
It certainly appears that Cisco does not have Auto Renew.
However, perhaps Cisco should be thankful that it has "Brad Reese on Cisco" to remind it that its domain name needs to be renewed before it expires!

Yawn......
Really, come on there must be something more interesting going on in Cisco's World than Chambers Jet Location or domain name expiration. I suggest you just buy the domain name and sell your second hand kit from it.
$23 million offer for the Cisco.com domain name
Crocker,
Do you think a $23 million offer will convince Cisco to sell the Cisco.com domain name?
Personally, I believe that the Cisco.com domain name is worth at least $20 million more than the HolidayInn.com domain name.
Perhaps Cisco prefers "living on the edge" and will renew Cisco.com at the last minute.
As far as second hand Cisco kit, it appears the domain name hardware.com won't expire until 2013.
Sincerely,
Brad Reese

Double yawn...
Any sane judge would force anyone who registered cisco.com to give the rights back, haven't you read any recent articles on domain squatters? Network World should cancel your column for all the self-promotion you did in this "article".
Good example of self-promotion
