Cisco, San Fran team on green

Cisco and the City of San Francisco this week unveiled Urban EcoMap, an Internet-based tool that enables cities to provide climate change information for their citizens. Urban EcoMap is designed to provide collective results of individual climate change actions and encourage "responsible" environmental choices, while creating competition among neighborhoods to reduce their carbon footprint, Cisco says.

Urban EcoMap provides information on carbon emissions from transportation, energy and waste among neighborhoods, organized by ZIP codes. It provides local communities with information on their progress toward meeting greenhouse gas reduction goals and gives them access to locally available resources for reducing their carbon footprint.

From there, it's up to residents to take action on climate change, such as operating alternative-fuel vehicles, reducing household energy use and recycling.

Urban EcoMap is scheduled to be available for public use by the citizens of San Francisco on May 21.

Cisco is collaborating on the Urban EcoMap program with industry, government and academic institutions, such as NASA and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich. In addition to San Francisco, several cities, such as Seoul and Amsterdam, have plans to pilot Urban EcoMap later this year, Cisco says.

Earlier this week, Cisco announced that it was participating with GE and others in a $200 million project to outfit Miami with a "smart" energy grid. Cisco also announced last month an initiative to team with cities globally on green projects.
