Juniper Networks takes direct aim at Cisco's one million certified engineers

By Brad Reese on Mon, 05/04/09 - 12:09am.

Juniper Networks Certification Fast Track ProgramIn my opinion, Juniper Networks is striking at the heart of Cisco's competitive edge, its one million certified engineers!

How you may ask?

Free Juniper JUNOS training for Cisco certified engineers until December 2009!

Obviously, Juniper J-Partner Resellers benefit from the program as it reduces the time and expense of getting SEs certified.

For this story, a well-known Cisco CCIE gave "kudos" to Juniper on its FREE, but cutting edge Juniper Fast Track Certification Program:

"Its design for training is based on the move by Juniper to enter the Enterprise channel. From its inception Juniper had been an ISP provider first. Companies like WorldCom were early investors in Juniper. With its current Enterprise market strategy, Juniper training is key for VAR’s and Enterprise customers to expand sales in this space. The key element to get the IT department to accept Juniper is to follow the Cisco model of developing their VAR relationship with a strong Training Program. The Cisco training program has been the industry leader for many years.

"But without competition Cisco has driven the cost of training up without benefiting the VAR with higher margins.

"Now Juniper, a well respected brand in the VAR community is helping to ramp VAR’s up faster with inexpensive, extensive training.

"I say, good for Juniper. The market needs to see successful competitors like HP and Juniper in the SMB and Enterprise channels. I am tired of asking, and asking, and asking Cisco to support industry protocols, (IPv6 at Ironport), become more reasonable with pricing per switch port, develop NX-OS features faster, expand the OS functionality of the ASA product line, (limited VPN, limited OSPF, no BGP, etc.) I could go on. With Juniper’s training program Cisco will adapt to the new market conditions or manage its way to..."

Juniper training details:

Anyone with a Cisco certification is eligible to enroll.
Once registered Cisco engineers have no-charge 24x7 access to courseware that prepares them for 4 JUNOS-based Enterprise certifications in routing and switching. Note: Cisco engineers should use the standard registration code ERC2232535 for FREE access until December 2009.
Once a Cisco engineer passes an online pretest, Juniper will email them a 50% off coupon for their certification exam at a Prometric center.
So, for $50-75 USD, Cisco engineers can earn a JUNOS based certification (or 4 for $200 USD or so).

Here’s the description of the 4 Juniper certs in the program:

1. JNCIA-ER Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate - Enterprise Routing

This is the base level certification on enterprise routing platforms.

2. JNCIS-ER Juniper Networks Certified Internet Specialist - Enterprise Routing

This is the next level of certification on enterprise routing platforms and the JNCIA-ER is recommended as a prerequisite.

3. JNCIS-ES Juniper Networks Certified Internet Specialist

This is the base level certification on enhanced security services and the JNCIA-ER is recommended as a prerequisite.

4. JNCIA-EX Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate

This is the base level certification on enterprise switching platforms.

Will Juniper drive a stake through Cisco's heart with this program?

Brad,

Where were you over a year ago when they started this by offering free courseware access and 100% free test vouchers? Not new news, but still a tactic that Juniper will have to take to make it's way into the Enterprise space traditionally owned by Cisco. If you work for a large named account, your Juniper rep should be able to get you free in person training as well.

So you too know the story of my life:

A day late a buck short...

Yes, you are correct in that Network World announced back in August 2007:

Juniper confirms offer of free training to JUNOS certifications for Cisco-certified pros

However, Juniper never announced that its Certification Fast Track Program had been extended until December 2009.

Furthermore, would like to mention that certifications other than Cisco also "qualify" for Juniper's program!

Sincerely,

$500 Cisco Certification.

To bolster Americas outsourcing activities, Cisco offers its $8,000 CCIE program in China to the Chinese people for $500. Of course if you are an American citizen and fly to China in hopes of getting the training for $500, you will probably be stunned to find out that even the Chinese training facilities will hold Americans to paying the full $8000.

Cisco - Anti American and determined to stay that way. Buy a linux box, build your own router and fight back.

Doesn’t matter to Juniper where you are

0

In the Juniper Fast Track Program, it doesn’t matter to Juniper where you are. The deal is still the same: access to no-cost training materials and 50% off the certification exam.

Sincerely,

Ummm ya

I work for Cisco and never heard of this. Where is your source ?

Can you elaborate which

0

Can you elaborate which $8000/- CCIE Program that Cisco offeres??? Cisco directly offers no program apart from the written or lab tests, so I am interested to know whether you have some real data or is just trying to confuse people.

Cisco has offered free training for partners via it's PEC (Partner E-learning Connection) for years. Glad Juniper decided to step up.

"To access the Partner Education Connection you must be registered as an employee of a Cisco Channel Partner company."

Not funny!

By the way, Juniper has offered Partner specific training (both paid and no charge) on JUNOS for years that complements what’s offered through the Fast Track Program.

Sincerely,

Yes, it is justified to

0

Yes, it is justified to train only employees, customers and partners with these free courses. And all three of these people would have their CCO login to access the partner e-learning connection. Anyone who is not an employee, customer and partner but have a justified need for these trainings - they can always approach Cisco.

For others, we have huge documentation anyway available on the CCO for years that doesn't require any login to access.

Any thoughts?
