Cisco added to the Dow

Cisco, the technology bellwether, is replacing GM, the industrial bellwether, on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. GM declared bankruptcy, which delisted it from the Dow.

Cisco was selected because technology is as important to the American and global economies as the auto industry was 83 years ago, when GM was first listed on the Dow. Indeed, Robert Thomson, managing editor of the Wall Street Journal and editor-in-chief for all of Dow Jones, said as much when explaining the rationale for adding Cisco:

"because its communications and computer-networking products are vital to an economy and culture still adapting to the Information Age - just as automobiles were essential to America in the 20th Century."

Cisco says its inclusion indicates how mainstream technology and the Internet are becoming in society:

Cisco is honored to be included in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.  We believe our inclusion in the Dow demonstrates not only Cisco's role as a broad technology indicator, but how remarkably the Internet and networking have transformed the way businesses and consumers connect, communicate and collaborate.

Other tech components of the Dow include IBM, HP, Microsoft, Intel, and AT&T and Verizon.
