According to a report on ChannelWeb, Robert Lloyd - perhaps the most likely successor to Cisco CEO John Chambers, is goading Cisco channel partners this week at the Cisco Partner Summit in Boston to wallop HP ProCurve:
"I think we've been taking too many punches with regard to the competitive landscape and not punching back ... We'll keep it clean, but for you we need to help define the value proposition on why we're a better choice than HP ProCurve.
"I'm encouraging all of us to punch back-- with a little bit of class -- and if we get it right, it will make a big difference in the market. In hockey, it's called 'the glare' ... Two people make eye contact, and nobody has to say anything: there's going to be a fight."
Also attending the Partner Summit, Cisco CEO John Chambers backed up the call to fisticuffs by his likely heir and successor:
"HP is a competitor, and we're going to have fun competing. We've never had a $110 billion competitor before.
"The last time we had this type of opportunity in front of us was with Nortel, Lucent and Alcatel: great companies, and we held our own pretty effectively."
Perhaps taking inspiration from the Cisco NetFlow Rap by Mix Master Mitch, it appears Cisco might be getting geared to "roll medieval" on HP ProCurve.
How so you may ask?
Well for starters, Cisco just released its first rap video (as seen below) that extolls Cisco channel partners to grow together and lead.
Cisco Video Partner Rap
What's your take, do you agree with John Chambers' most likely successor Robert Lloyd that Cisco has taken way too many punches from HP ProCurve?

Correct me if I’m
Correct me if I’m wrong...
Cisco was the first to “pull the rug” from under their biggest partner HP, with their blade server push. And without blinking, they embarked on this whole media campaign of attacks on HP. How is it that they now want to get other partners to gang up against HP.
It is funny that they want to concentrate on HP, while they have much greater threats in Juniper, IBM, Brocade, Riverbed, etc. I get the focus-warfare strategy, but they may be fighting the wrong battle.
Linux is dealing with Microsoft, because the technology-world wants open systems with standards that foster ease of interoperation. I don't think IT-decision-makers want to be held ransom anymore by HP, IBM, Nortel, Lucent or the Great Cisco. They want FREEDOM and flexibility to adjust to changing times and budgets. Be it in a recession or in times of abundance.
LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE!
No correction, and yes the people will decide!
No correction and agree with you that the people will decide!
In my opinion, EVERYBODY is a threat to Cisco these days, especially because Cisco's only real true focus appears to be exclusively self-centered (which is exactly the reason why Wall Street tanked).
Does the video below of Thierry Drilhon (Page 9) - Cisco Vice President Europe of Worldwide Channels convince you that everything with Cisco channel partners is spot on?
Sincerely,
Brad Reese

Brad: What a bunch of
Brad:
What a bunch of nonsense this video was! 1 minute and 57 seconds of PR business tongue-flapping.
Cisco is tanking. Is the whole company going to drink the final cup or do you think people will break free and continue to lead somewhat normal but psychologically fractured lives?
Heinz 57 Sauce
In my opinion, it seemed all "sauce" and no "substance."
But perhaps I'm totally clueless.
Thank you for your comment!

Brad, Thank goodness you are
Brad,
Thank goodness you are not a wallstreet advisor. Your comment of " Cisco's only real true focus appears to be exclusively self-centered (which is exactly the reason why Wall Street tanked)." shows your ignorance on the side of business investing. The whole market "tanked" with some China ETF's loosing 75% of their value. Is China still growing? Yes. Was it oversold? Yes. Will those ETF's return back? They've started by being up 25-35% in 5 weeks. Is all of Cisco's recent 52 week loss because of what they have been doing? Heck no.
I'd suggest sticking to advising on what you know about and not making comments in areas that you are obviously not qualified to do so.
Yes, I'm Ignorant About Business Investing
Non,
Yes, agree with you that I'm ignorant about business investing:
Bear Stearns is gone!
Lehman Brothers is gone!
Finally, Merrill Lynch has been pawned off to Bank of America by the U.S. Government!
Got to admit that I don't feel so lonely anymore and I "shirley" feel better now to know that I'm in good company too.
Guess there's a reason "Bulls" travel in herds and "Bears" travel pretty much alone.
Sincerely,
Brad Reese

Hows That?
Wait, you are saying Cisco is wrong for going into the blade server market, but HP is fine going into the networking market? That makes no sense, HP drew first blood when they bought ProCurve and then promised Cisco that they were going to drop the line. Instead they went back on their word and started competing heavily, so Cisco said, well you know we can make a server blade too and did it...seems like all is fair in love and war.
Somewhere along the way
Somewhere along the way, management at both Cisco and HP dropped the ball.
In my opinion, this is strictly a management issue where the parties involved stopped being able to agree on building their relationship further.
Sincerely,
Brad Reese

Cisco has taken a lot of punches from HP
And they've barely begun to take the beating thats coming. Cisco has peaked and is on its way down. Cisco got greedy - too many product lines, too arrogant, stabbed too many partners, too many closed and proprietary products, too little focus on any one product line.
RIP
HP Can't Beat Cisco
It's my personal opinion that HP can't beat Cisco!
In my opinion, the only one who can beat Cisco, is Cisco itself.
Sincerely,
Brad Reese
