Not a Lot of Excitement for Networkers This Year?

Less Advertising This Year Makes Me Think Networks is Low-Keyed in 2009

By michaeljmorris on Sun, 06/14/09 - 6:19pm.

I've sort of noticed this year there's been a lack of advertising and excitement for Networkers (aka Cisco Live) in San Francisco starting in 2 weeks.

No, I'm not attending. But that is because training budgets are tight this year. If they weren't I would definitely go since I enjoy the week of learning, socializing, information from vendors, and blogging topics.

My Blog Worked Again!! CCIE Party is Back!!

Normally, I start getting e-mails in February and March about signing up. Being a CCIE NetVet I'm usually offered the chance to sign up early, like last year:

But I haven't received a single e-mail this year about Networkers. Something tells me Cisco hasn't lost my e-mail address either since I still get plenty of e-mail from Cisco on all three of my e-mail accounts. There were also no e-mails about a CCIE Party which Cisco brought back last year after a year off. On, off, on-again, off again? Something strange there.

In light of the economy, I was mildly surprised Cisco didn't cancel Networkers this year. But, being the 20th anniversary and being in June (instead of January during the depths of the recession and financial shock) it makes sense to keep it going.

But, seems more low keyed this year.

What have you seen and heard? Just as hyped as previous years? Or what I'm seeing?

Cisco Live 2009

I did finally receive an email regarding the CCIE party so that is still planned, but I do agree that the marketing around networkers has been low key. It's a real shame since this is my first trip to Cisco Live, but I do hope to have a good experience.

I dont think anyone is going.

Hiya MM,

Cisco told me in a email that Cisco Live is a invitation only for media and they would get back with us. That was months ago and still no word. Kind of hard to blog about Cisco Live when Cisco wont allow media to go.

So I am going to spend my time in SFO the same week talking to other vendors live ProCurve, Riverbed, Polycom and many others. So if any one cares I will be the One at Michael Mina's in the St.Francis Hotel buying drinks on a few nights. Just not for the Cisco Marketing or Press Teams.

But that will be my week of blogs, everything but Cisco since they dont want to invite media to Cisco Live.

Virtually live

I got an invite to attend "virtually." Isn't that an oxymoron?

Nothing

I agree. I have not seen much at all from them regarding the event. I made sure I was signed up for the emails and never got one that wasn't related to my current registration. Never saw a flyer or even a postcard for that matter. And even now as a registered attendee, I have not received as much info via email as I have in the past. It is kind of disappointing.

I am going - received lots of Advertising

I got lucky - no budget, but Cisco is taking learning credits this year and we had enough left. I do have to pay my own airfare (I had points to use luckily).

As far as getting an invitation, I have only attended once (2007), but I got plenty of emails starting in February. I also received a Cisco Live poster from Cisco in April, and a brochure, before I registered.

So far, from what I have seen and heard, Networkers is business as usual. They are expecting a much lower turnout, but they have not cut anything as far as sessions, meet the Engineers, World of solutions, etc.

If anything, I look at this as a great opportunity for those of us going; lots of direct access to Cisco and other Vendors.

Our company is planning on having one or two people attend virtually as well, I believe we are doing that on learning credits as well.

Cisco Live! is so passe

Hi Michael,

Perhaps because Cisco Live! is so passe!

I mean, you guys have got to get with it, because Cisco's future is totally consumer-based with its upcoming future products sold at mass retail outlets, no need anymore for expensive CCIEs when future Cisco customers will be consumers buying Flip devices:

Sincerely,

Brad Reese

I'll look into your invitation issue, but there is a lot of to be excited about at Cisco Live 2009 including great content on cloud computing, SaaS, security, data center, IP networking and collaboration. We have thousands customers attending and we look forward to meeting and networking with everyone either in person or online.

Regarding our virtual event, over the last year Cisco has used our collaboration solutions to provide a virtual component to several of our corporate events. With Cisco TelePresence, Cisco WebEx and our virtual event platform, we can deliver an informative and engaging experience while providing productivity, environmental and expense benefits for everyone.

So even if you can't travel, you can still attend online through Cisco Live virtual, http://www.cisco-live.com

I feel bad for the B-52s...

It might be a scant audience they play to.

They are still playing... right?
