File this one under, current-economy-a-good-time-to-consider-alternatives. Quinnipiac University in Connecticut is replacing its Cisco network with 3Com.
Not a huge project -- less than $1 million, according to sister pub Computerworld -- but nonetheless vital as Quinnipiac looks for an affordable way to support growing video traffic on its network. The school will install several 3Com H3C data center switches and more than 100 H3C edge switches to upgrade the network, which is used by 8,000 students in addition to faculty and staff.
3Com is re-energizing itself for another run at the global large enterprise switching market after a couple of hiccups over the past decade. This deal can't hurt.

It is not news that a
It is not news that a competitor underbids Cisco -- happens all the time. It is news that some have forgiven 3Com's past behavior...

3Com - Who cares?
I can see tapping HP or Juniper as an alternative to Cisco, but 3Com.
3Com-We care ! We see their sincere commitment.
Do you forget and forgive Lemon brothers, AIG, RBS, GM, ING,Nortel, Citicrop etc.. all big giant in financial turnmoil ? Be fair to 3Com. HP did move a way from it advance stack hub and take OEM from Accton. Intel cut their networking biz in earlier 2000. You forget their behavior ??
Every deal hurts (if you loose)
Be aware of 3Com, affordable price with most common features in a box. Why pay for features you don't use?
More of a concern is the Huawei components
Would you trust your switch infrastructure and DC to Huawei which means "Chinese Way" ? Also do you trust your infrastructure to a vendor that will discount it's product just to get into deals? I'd rather pay for support, stability (financial and product) and certified individuals as those costs far outweigh the CAPEX costs. But, that's just me and I don't work at this University.
The Wrong solution for Free is still the Wrong solution
Good luck! Will students now be forced to look at the Services Schools provide in order to make a decision- will the Network and School Provided Services now be used as a competitive weapon in order to distinguish themeselves academically? I'd now think twice before attending this college--
