When Microsoft releases the beta of its freebie basic security program at noon ET today, Windows Essential Security (formerly code-named "Morro"), it will cap the number of downloads to 75,000, Microsoft says.
Windows Security Essentials replaces Windows Live OneCare and Microsoft will stop selling OneCare on June 30. The free download will be posted on a new Microsoft site dedicated to Security Essentials (the page will go live when Microsoft flips the switch to allow the 75,000 downloads).
Microsoft has started to position Windows Essential Security as a tool well suited for netbooks, as it requires less memory and disk space than some commercial products available.
