Cisco selling refurbished Linksys directly to end users

Is this a new market transition for Cisco?

Linksys by Cisco Refurbished

It appears Cisco has successfully made the market transition to selling refurbished Linksys directly to end users, according to Cisco:

Linksys by Cisco Certified Refurbished Product

Refurbished product are mostly customer returns that meet original factory specifications. These products have been fully tested, upgraded to latest firmware, and certified by Cisco-Linksys technicians via Linksys ISO certification procedures. These products may have minor cosmetic blemishes that do not impact their performance or overall product look integrity. Limited warranty and technical support period is ninety (90) days for refurbished product sold in the United States.

3 months after Cisco registered the shoplinksys.com domain name to sell refurbished Linksys, Cisco merged the Linksys channel partner program into Cisco's registered partner tier.

Interestingly on the same website, Cisco is also offering its new home media ensemble too:

Linksys by Cisco Media

However, the New York Times reported earlier this week about the Linksys by Cisco Wireless Home Audio System:

"The company has not yet advertised the product. And Cisco shouldn’t until it works out the kinks. To insure that my wireless network would not be a problem, I set up the Director unit in the same room, about 10 feet from my router. But it still took several tries for the unit to find my network, and it did so only after I restarted the Director. Then it froze. I did notice a pronounced delay between the time I altered the volume on the remote and when I actually heard the volume change. Similarly, after selecting a song from the menu, the track would not play for several seconds. And several times, a song would begin while the cover art for the previous song, as well as the time elapsed, remained for several seconds."

What's your take, is Cisco getting ready to sell its refurbished gear directly to end users too?

Seems logical.

I think it's a smart business decision to sell your refurbished equipment at a discounted price. There are people who prefer to buy refurbished than new in many product areas. And don't tell me you're going to fault a company for refurbishing Cisco hardware, are you Brad? ;)

Conflict with the channel

It appears Cisco is in conflict with its own channel selling directly to end users.

I like the review.

I like the review. Consumers are in for a shock with Cisco products.

Cisco doesn't beta test or quality test its code before they release it. You should be grateful that you even OWN a Cisco product, and that you are a part of history being a beta-tester for Cisco. Whatever price you paid for your Cisco gear, is small, compared to the monumental contribution you are making.

Where do you get your information?

Hi, I've been a Cisco engineer for over 10 years - most of that time as a test engineer (mostly on router and network management products). The in-house testing sometimes may have shown flaws when the product actually hit the market. Cisco does also perform field trials for all products, as far as I know (at least they have on all products I have worked on).

There has definitely been concern shown by Cisco's management and article have a appeared in various trade magazines that the quality of certain products needs to improve. To say Cisco doesn't beta test or quality test its code before they release it is simply not true.

I've owned two Linksys wireless routers (802.11b and 802.11 a/b/g/n) and both have been good quality (I've occasionally had to reset the newer 802.11 a/b/g/n router but never had to reset the older model). I've also owned an 802.11 a/b/g router from a Cisco competitor and the quality of that device was terrible (resetting at least once per day).

Brad's quote of the NYT article regarding Cisco's wireless home audio system does show that testing that particular product was inadequate.

I'm curious as to which Cisco products you have used or know of where you got the impression no in house or beta testing was performed on the product.

Refurbished Linksys routers are nothing but trouble

Just read my twitters: http://twitter.com/metinspiratie

Man, I've had my 4th RMA this week... the Linksys WRT350N and WRT610N just did not work.
The last one had a malfunctioning adapter. None of the lights came on!
The Linksys technical departement don't do their jobs right. :(

Imagine the trouble you could get when buying a refurbished product from Linksys!!!
