Juniper ain't foolin' around when it says it will rely on partnerships to battle rival Cisco in hot new markets. The company this week announced an extension to its arrangement with Nokia Siemens to address integration of IP routing with DWDM optical for carrier networks, just weeks after announcing a collaboration for Carrier Ethernet.
Cisco makes its own IP-over-WDM modules for its routers, some of which are used on Carrier Ethernet platforms like its ASR 9000 and 7600 series routers.
And Juniper lined up another ex-Microsoft executive to arrange partnerships with companies globally. Gerri Elliott will report to another ex-Microsoft biggie: Juniper CEO Kevin Johnson.
Johnson and Juniper have made no bones about intentions to buddy up with industry bigwigs in areas like data center, cloud computing, and enterprise and carrier networks. Many expect its partnership with IBM around cloud computing and resale of Juniper LAN switches to solidify into an OEM arrangement.
And all this at a time when Cisco seems to be cutting ties with partners like IBM and HP by stepping on their toes in the key markets...
