Cisco says it has achieved $277 million in productivity savings by allowing employees to work from home. According to this report by colleague Denise Dubie, an internal survey conducted by Cisco found employees to be happier and thriftier when allowed to work from home.
Cisco based its productivity savings on the number of billed hours at an average of $91 per hour, with the total figure reaching about $277 million, Dubie reports. In addition, the vendor estimated employees garnered fuel cost savings exceeding $10 million per year.
Cisco estimates that about 20,000 employees use the company's Virtual Office to work remotely from their homes. Virtual Office enables remote users to connect to Cisco's network through a VPN.

Cisco Virtual Office - Next generation of office worker
I recently transitioned to a remote worker using CVO technology and I love it! I have the opportunity to begin my day based upon my customer needs and requirements (my day started today at 6:30 AM).
My family adapted easily to my work from home status and appreciates that if they need me I am here.
My personal opinion is that being a remote worker is the next generation of worker.
Many people expressed concerns with being isolated but in fact, the social networking tools available today enhance the remote worker experience.
In an office environment many people eat lunch at their desk and barely take breaks. In the transition to a remote worker I have found that I take a walk (5 minutes around the block at regular intervals), eat my lunch away from my computer and socialize more with my friends.
I am a newbie to being a remote worker but I definitely see many advantages. I am healthier, happier and more productive!
Cisco and Telework
It is worthwhile remembering that Cisco has been benefiting from telework for over 10 years. When promoting European Telework Week in the mid-late 90s, it was encouraging to see a company like Cisco using hot-desking, teleworking etc. Advances in Virtual presence will eliminate the last detractors.
