Riverbed announces three releases for the Steelhead Mobile Controller Appliance, including a Virtual Edition for RSP
Riverbed has announced releases a new Steelhead Mobile Controller Virtual Edition (SMC-VE) for the Riverbed Services Platform (RSP).
This new product will run on a VMware Workstation like the other products on the RSP, but is meant for the smaller Riverbed Steelheads. It starts with a licensing package of 10 concurrent licenses and a price less than half of a full Riverbed Mobile Server. This new product will allow smaller customers to have the same product that larger customers have now at a SMB price point.
The new SMC-VE does start at 10 concurrent licenses but can scale up to 100 concurrent licenses.
Riverbed has also expanded the original Steelhead Mobile Controller Appliance by some 2000 licenses without any additional hardware needed. The Steelhead Mobile Controller Appliance now can have up to 4000 licenses on one appliance for larger companies and those who want to expand without purchasing another controller.
Also with this announcement Riverbed has done something none of its competitors can do, that is optimize Lotus Notes with the Mobile Platform. This means that if you are on the Steelhead Mobile Controller Appliance or the SMC-VE you will be able to optimize Layer 7 Lotus Notes. This will work well for those companies and especially financial institutions such as large banks that are still using Lotus Notes.
In the testing process of the Lotus Notes enhancement, customers who are using it in their production environment saw a performance gain of 18x or more. One thing to remember about the mobile clients, employees don’t have to be mobile to use the product. If you have a small office of a few people, the mobile client is a great alternative to a larger Steelhead Appliance.
