Microsoft to push out critcal patch on Tuesday for IE, Windows

Out--of-band patches fix critical hole in Windows and IE and moderate hole in Visual Studio

Late Friday, Microsoft notified users that on Tuesday, July 28, it would be pushing out a critical patch for Windows and IE, and a moderate patch for Visual Studio. Both patches will be sent via Windows Update and will require computers to reboot after patching.

Although Microsoft activated its urgent advance notification network, reserved for the worst threats, it was vague as the exact nature of the vulnerability. It said:

"These are out-of-band security bulletins. One bulletin will be for the Microsoft Visual Studio product line; application developers should be aware of updates available affecting certain types of applications. The second bulletin contains defense-in-depth changes to Internet Explorer to address attack vectors related to the Visual Studio bulletin, as well as fixes for unrelated vulnerabilities that are rated Critical. Customers who are up to date on their security updates are protected from known attacks related to this out-of-band release."

Microsoft PR did say that, whatever the mysterious vulnerability is, customers who are up to date on their security updates are protected from known attacks related to this out-of-band release.
