Microsoft was in front on the curve Friday, releasing the final bits on Windows Server 2008 R2 to volume licensing customers nearly a week ahead of the time promised.
The final bits were also made available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers.
Originally, the so-called release to manufacturing was to happen Aug. 19. Late Friday afternoon (Aug. 14) the bits were available for download.
Say what you want about Windows 7, but the server release, with upgrades such as Live Migration, is what IT pros committed to Windows infrastructures have been truly eyeing.
For those not in the selected groups, there is an evaluation version available for 180 days.
