Welcome to Hadoop World

Forget rhetoric, the Hadoop World conference will be a nexus of cloud computing brain power

Okay, I am as sick of the hype around cloud computing as anyone else but I also belive that cloud computing architecture is a very exciting future technology with a few existing proofpoints like Amazon, Google, DISA, Microsoft, IBM System z, etc.

One of the underpinnings of cloud computing is a technology called Apache Hadoop. The Apache Hadoop website describes the technology as follows:

"The Apache Hadoop project develops open-source software for reliable, scalable, distributed computing."

Hadoop may be more familiar to some as a distributed file system or as the technology underpinning behind Google MapReduce but it is now much more that this. It is beyond this blog to provide more detail so I suggest that interested parties go to http://hadoop.apache.org.

Now I know that "Hadoop World" sounds more like an electronics store in Time Square than an industry trade show, but in truth, next-week's Hadoop World conference in NYC will be a who's who of the Cloud Computing intelligencia. There are presentations from Cloudera, Amazon, Google, and IBM as well as training sessions, Open Source developers, and academics. My guess is that there will also be a lot of venture capitalists and investment bankers looking for the next next big thing.

Since I have to attend a few trade shows annually, I tend to avoid others but in this case, I wish I could go to Hadoop World myself. Alas, I'll be in DC and won't be available. For others serious about cloud computing and next-generation web applications, data collection, storage, and analysis this show should be worth the time.

PS: For those cynics who read this, please note that I have nothing to do with the show whatsoever. I simply think that it will be a worthwhile learning and networking event for real Cloud knowledge -- not your typical marketing/booth babes trade show extravaganza.
