Juniper buying Riverbed? It is the rumor on the financial web sites today.

Did Chambers get out done by a rival again?

By Larry Chaffin on Fri, 10/09/09 - 2:46pm.

I have been called all afternoon about the rumor that Juniper is buying a rival Riverbed. While this comes out as a shocking even,t it is really not hard to believe as the Juniper product is not that good. But is it true or just a rumor? If true I am really surprised if this does not turn into a bidding war between Cisco and Juniper if someone really wants to take over the company. Chambers could use some of those billions he has off shore that I am sure is just waiting to be invested into more India projects. So if the rumor is true it will be a shame as the staff at Riverbed has done a good job and will just be swallowed up by a bigger company. If you look at the way Juniper and Riverbed have managed their wan acceleration products it is a wonder they have not tried to buy Riverbed before now.

If Juniper does buy Riverbed and the rumors are true, they will have one up on Cisco again in a space where Cisco is a number three now. Remember we did not start the rumor as you can see below just reporting on it.

This would not be good for Riverbed customers

If history repeats itself, just like Peribit and Netscreen, the innovation and new features will slow...and competition will catch up.

I would agree

I would say that it is just not Juniper who has had issue after buying a company, Cisco has done the same thing. But when a company gets purchased by a larger company is loses value and steam with sales and technology. It would have been better if HP buys Riverbed and keeps it a separate company, this way things would keep rolling.

Something like what 3Com has done with Tippingpoint

Something like what 3Com has done with Tippingpoint?? It owns Tippingpoint, but Tippingpoint is still operating as separate company. I might be incorrect, in which case feel free to correct me.

tipping point

yes .. 3com and tipping point .. or emc and vmware. the sad thing is that neither tipping point nor vmware have benefited from their parent firms (in terms of sales / marketing help) but it is true that neither firm was ruined and both did/are doing well. the only issue with hp or jnpr buying riverbed is that they want it to be a critical part of thier solution and vision ... unlike 3com and emc which did not necessarily need those firms as part of their overall vision ...
