Chinese censors snag Wikipedia

My own issues with Wikipedia, expressed in this week’s ‘Net Buzz column, are but mere quibbles compared with the beef that the Chinese government has with that country’s version of the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit.

Anyone outside of China, mind you, since Chinese censors have blocked the site on and off for years now. Currently the block is on. You can get a good read on the tensions surrounding that decision in this article from the Washington Post.

“The number of people using the Chinese Wikipedia site has dropped, but devoted users are finding ways to access it,” the story concludes. “The community now boasts 45,000 registered users, most from the mainland. Among the site's 56,000 entries is one that explains how to get around the government's firewall.”
