Virtualization update at PASS

The last session of last year's PASS in Seattle was another standing room only session that went far beyond the advertised time. I think the phrase was "You don't have to go home, but you sure have to get out of here...". It was the great subject of Virtualization of SQL Servers with Hyper-V. I hope to get an update in Seattle next week.

There's "SQL Server Consolidation and Virtualization: Myths, Realities and Best Practices" by Joe Yong at 4:30pm on Tuesday. I seem to remember that Joe gave a great presentation on real life upgrades to SQL 2008 last year. Sure to be a good one this year too.

Then for the early birds, there's a "Virtualization Breakfast Session hosted by the PASS Virtualization VC and VMWare" just to make sure Microsoft don't get all the fun and people remember that VMWare is the market leader in this technology. It's at 7am Thursday.

Then there's a follow-up from last year: "SQLCAT/SQL Server Consolidation Series - Consolidation and virtualization best practices and recommendations" by Lindsey Allen and Madhan Arumugan. I am wondering if Microsoft has made significant progress on the 1000's of internal production SQL Servers that they wanted to consolidate using Hyper-V technology.

This time they have moved it up from the last session of the week to Thursday morning 10:45am. Still likely to be packed but even with 90 minutes may run over its 12:15pm finish. Then again it runs into lunch and DBAs have to eat at some point. Or do we?

...Insert Halloween joke here: Zombies and DBA's? Nah, leave it out - Ed...

Happy Halloween!

cheers
Brian
