The iPhone for the past 2 years has enjoyed preeminent spot as the top smartphone on the market. But since its release a little more than 2 years ago, competitors have increasingly been upping the ante and churning out more impressive devices. First came the Storm from RIM, which by all accounts did nothing to threaten the iPhone's standing. Next came the Palm Pre, which despite a ton of hype and generally decent reviews hasn't posed much of a threat to Apple either. But the recently released Motorola Droid now out on the market, it seems that Apple has finally met its match, at least when you compare spec sheets.
The Motorola Droid is the first phone that critics are placing on par with the iPhone, and it's accompanied with a huge marketing push from Motorola, Verizon, and even Google, which took the unusual step of actually advertising the Droid on the typically ad-free Google homepage.

The Droid retails for $199 after a $100 rebate, while a comparable iPhone 3GS retails for $199 without having to deal with the headaches that often accompany a rebate. Still, Apple understandably isn't too keen on another phone stealing its thunder, and in an attempt to stifle any potential for the Droid to develop any real momentum in the marketplace, Apple is reportedly planning to offer an 8GB model of the iPhone 3GS for only $99.
The iPhone 3GS, of course, is the most recent version of the iPhone, and features much faster internals in addition to the ability to take high quality photos and record video. When first released, the base model came was 16GB, but now we might soon see a 8GB model hitting store shelves in time for the holiday shopping season.
