Mike Volpi kept his word to his Skype investment group, he got the Father of SIP - Jonathan Rosenberg, to jump ship.
Skype announced Roseberg jumped ship from Cisco the day after our blog story published emails that disclosed Rosenberg had an interest in discussing Skype with Volpi.
Rosenberg is now Skype's Chief Technology Strategist - responsible for Skype's overall architecture and technology strategy.
Daniel Berg - Skype's CTO had this to say about bringing Rosenberg onboard:
"We are tremendously excited to have Jonathan Rosenberg join us. His experience and his track record of innovation within the industry will be a great asset for us. Having someone of Jonathan's caliber join our talented technology team will help us continue to stay ahead and build for the future."
Email from Mike Volpi discussing the skills and abilities of Skype CTO Daniel Berg:
Interestingly, the person who did not make the new Skype team?
Why none other then Mike Volpi himself.
What's your take, how much of a loss to Cisco will Rosenberg's departure be?
Do you think Rosenberg will convince other Cisco stars to join Skype too?

Maybe volpi was not the reason JR left ? Cisco is not the biggest proponent of SIP. Don't know what the big deal is.Anyone can write a SIP client. Is Skype building a frontend to their proprietery servers ?
No big deal?
Mike Volpi bragged he could deliver Jonathan Rosenberg to Skype.
Now Rosenberg is responsible for Skype's overall architecture and technology strategy.
And that's no big deal?

not big deal, imho
Volpi probably have a 1 year moratorium on poaching. Not sure if his one year is up yet. Rosenberg probably didn't see SIP going anywhere inside Cisco and the Skype job probably is more challanging and Skype has deep pockets. In my view, the Nordic twins are the evil ones. They blindsided Ebay and now they want to move on to SIP. I definitely would not want to do business with them.
The Nordic twins
Interesting, how exactly did the Nordic twins blindside eBay?

Meg Whitman
Meg Whitman, who is running for governor BTW, did not read the clause that allowed them to retain the rights to the software. Ebay was asleep at the wheel, and the twins snuck a clause into the buy-out contract.
I disagree
I disagree, as eBay CEO - Meg Whitman had to have read all of the deal's covenants:
Sale Agreement of Skype to eBay: Core Software
Smoking Gun: Schedule 2 (Conditions to Completion)
The sale agreement clearly stated that Skype's Core Software would continue to be owned by Joltid, not Skype nor eBay.
Meanwhile, Marc Andreessen sits on the board of directors of eBay and is part of the investment group that's buying Skype.
Is that NOT a giant conflict of interest, especially for a sitting board director of eBay who has a fiduciary duty to serve eBay's shareholders by maximizing their wealth?
Why does eBay need to sell Skype in the first place?
eBay's current management team running Skype will be the same management team running Skype after its sale.
Personally, I would put all of eBay's investment bankers on a plank (yes, that includes you, Nick Giovanni at Goldman Sachs) and make them walk off it, one by one!

sip
The only reason skype is even looking at SIP is because this particular piece of software.
Guess I'm a dummy
Guess I'm a dummy because I don't comprehend the meaning of your comment.

sorry
If i was too cryptic. Skype recently negotiated with Ebay to free the code (within the last few days). Before that they were thinking about moving away from the proprietary p2p code and use SIP instead. Now that they have an agreement in place, they can choose either direction.
It's my personal opinion
Thanks for the clarification, however, it's my personal opinion that as long as Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom are involved with Skype, the Skype investment group will be facing robust operating obstacles as well as substantial financial risk!
